Kusatsu Town

Outline

Kusatsu is situated in northwest Gunma Prefecture. It is a small town, extending 9 km from east to west and 8 km from north to south. It is surrounded by the villages/towns of Kuni, Naganohara, Tsumagoi and the Shiga Plateau.
Some 100 springs within the town produce an extraordinary amount of hot water, approximately 32,000 litres a minute or 46 million litres a day, enough to fill some 230,000 drums. This is the highest natural hot spring water output in Japan. Because of the high output, and because the high temperature of the water makes additional heating unnecessary, source water (without any adjustments or dilution) has been used for bathing since ancient times. Also, the spring water is highly acidic, which gives it excellent antibacterial qualities. Kusatsu Town has made a commitment to the strict preservation of spring quality.
