前橋市は、東経139度03分、北緯36度23分に位置し、群馬県の中央部よりやや南、東京から約100kmの地点にあります。海抜の最高は柏倉町の1,571.9m、最低は下増田町の65.6mで、北南にかけてゆるやかな傾斜地をなしています。市の中央部から南部にかけては100m前後の平坦地をなしていて、本市を両分する利根川をはさんで両側に市街地が発達しています。北西に連なる赤城、上信越の山々に囲まれて、やや内陸性を帯び降雨量は少ないほうです。年間の平均気温は13度から14度ですが、気温の差は大きいので四季の変化に富んでいます。例年11月から翌年4月にかけて晴天が多く、北西の季節風が吹き、特に冬期の風は強く、俗に「上州のからっ風」と呼ばれています。6月から8月にかけて、南東の風が吹きます。夏期は気温が高く、激しい雷がおこります。

On a map, Maebashi is located at 3623" N 13904" E about 100km north of Tokyo, in the southern-central area of Gunma prefecture. The area slopes gently northward ranging from a height of 1,487.7 meters to 65.6 meters above sea level. Central Maebashi is situated along the banks of the Tone River. Maebashi City is surrounded by the Akagi and Jyo-Shinetsu Mountains. Maebashi has typical inland climate with little precipitation. The average temperature ranges from about 13C14C and this intensifies the beauty of the four seasons. November to April generally has fine weather, however in winter, a strong seasonal wind blows from the northwest. This wind is quite famous and is called Jyoshu no karakkaze (dry wind of Jyoshu). From June to August a wind blows from the southeast. During the summer, temperatures are high and there is a lot of lightening.

◆敷島公園　Shikishima Park

　約3,000本もの松が植えられた、総敷地面積36.6haという広大な敷島公園。その北側には600種、7,000株のバラが咲き誇るバラ園。さらには萩原朔太郎記念館や前橋市蚕糸記念館、各種スポーツ施設など前橋の歴史、自然、文化を代表するエレメントが充実。また、周辺には洗練されたカフェやレストランなどが目白押しで、一日この周辺にいても飽きることはない。

Shikishima Park covers an area of 36.6 hectare and is renowned for its natural forest, which is home to nearly 3,000 majestic pines. To the north is the Municipal Rose Garden, with over 7,000 rose bushes in 600 varieties. Visitors can also enjoy the Hagiwara Sakutaro Memorial Museum and the Municipal Silk Memorial Museum. There are abundant sports facilities as well as historic, natural and cultural assets located throughout the park. Shikishima Park is surrounded by a number of attractive cafes and restaurants. There is something for everyone at Shikishima Park.

◆滝沢の不動滝　Takizawa Fudo Falls

　滝めぐりができるほど、たくさんの滝が見られます。その中でも、粕川上流にあって、落差32m、赤城随一といわれるのが、滝沢の不動滝。霧と虹が織りなす幻想的な風景が妖しい夏、凍結した氷柱が見事と言うしかない冬、いずれも捨てがたい。途中には国定忠治が身を隠したと言われる岩屋もある。

Maebashi City has so many waterfalls that you can make a tour of them. However, the best of all these falls is Mt.Akagi's Takizawa Fudo Falls, which cascades 32 meters. The summer scene with its mists and rainbows, and the mid-winter season of an overwhelming pillar of ice are both worth visiting. On the way to Fudo Falls, there is a cave where Kunisada Chuji is said to have hid from his pursuers.

◆赤城高原牧場　クローネンベルク・ドイツ村　Kronenberg, German village

　赤城山南面に広がる広大な敷地の中に、ドイツ農村の村並が広がります。牧場では、羊の追い込みショーが開催されるほか、乗馬体験もできます。食事もオリジナルソーセージ、地ビールをはじめ、ピザやドイツ菓子まで堪能できます。遊具やアトラクションも充実しているとともに、季節ごとの催し物も多く開催されるので家族揃って一日楽しく過ごせます。

Kronenberg is a German village situated at the foothills on the south side of Mount Akagi. At the Kronenberg ranch you can enjoy horse-riding and watch sheep run in shows. ◆大胡ぐりーんふらわー牧場　Ogo Green Flower Park

　冬の澄んだ空気の中、見上げる夜空は、見る者を魅惑の天体ショーへと誘います。また、展望台に登れば眼下に前橋市街地を中心に一大パノラマの夜景が広がります。昼間でも、ランドマークのオランダ風車のほか、牧場で牛や羊、ポニーなどの動物とのふれあいができます。この他、バンガロー施設や農産物直売所もあります。

In the clear winter air, the night sky invites the viewers to watch a heavenly star show. At the observation tower, under your eyes, a night view of the streets of Maebashi opens up. Even during the day it is fun to visit the famous Dutch windmill, and play with sheep, cows and ponies. The ranch is equipped with bungalows and a shop sells agricultural products directly from local farms at incredibly low prices.

◆前橋七夕まつり　Tanabata Festival

　このまつりは、昭和26年から前橋全市をあげて始められ、市民はもとより県内外からの観光客でにぎわう全国有数の七夕まつりです。中心商店街をはじめ19の周辺商店街が参加します。商店街は、それぞれ趣向をこらした七夕飾りで埋まり、まるでトンネルのようです。飾りには人気テレビ番組のキャラクターや、社会の出来事を反映したり風刺したものがお目見えして行き交う人々を楽しませてくれます。飾りの下には露店もたくさん出て、にぎわいに拍車をかけます。４日間を通じて七夕飾りコンクールのほか多彩なイベントが繰り広げられ、市民の人気を集めています。

Since it was initiated as a citywide event in 1951, the Maebashi Tanabata festival regularly attracts more residents and visitors from out of town than any other event. It is one of the largest Tanabata festivals in Japan with 19 shopping streets in and around the center of town participating. Each shopping street has a particular theme and the shops prepare their own Tanabata decorations, creating bamboo tunnels throughout the arcades. Some of the more popular designs are of TV and comic book characters, others reflect the current social situations of the times. Beneath the decorations, a noisy, festival atmosphere is encouraged by street vendors in stalls competing for customers. The festival lasts for days and includes a "Best Decoration" contest and many other events.

◆前橋まつり　Maebashi Festival

　このまつりは、戦後「復興祭」として催されたのが始まりで、その後、昭和24年に「商工祭」、昭和34年に市民総参加のまつりとして、「前橋まつり」と改められました。各町内会、企業・団体などが参加する文字通り市民挙げての祭りです。
・日時：１０月の上旬または中旬

This festival was first held after the war as a "restoration festival" and later on in 1949, it was reorganized as a "commercial/industrial festival". Since 1959, it has enjoyed the participation of the general public under the name "Maebashi-matsuri". Each neighborhood committee, independent enterprise as well as other municipal and private groups participate to help make it a true "Citizens' Festival".

◆前橋花火大会　Fireworks Exhibition

　昭和23年頃から本格的なものとなったが、一時中断。昭和56年に復活し、今日まで続いています。８号玉の連続打ちやスターマイン、大渡橋の仕掛け花火「ナイアガラ」、前橋発祥といわれる空中ナイアガラ。数百発の花火が一度に打ち上げられ、空中で壮大な流れを織りなします。川幅などの関係で、号数は８号までに制限されていますが、その分、花火の音と光の迫力をすぐ近くで体感できるのが、前橋花火大会の醍醐味と言えます。また、２カ所から交互に打ち上げを行うので、待ち時間が少なく連続して花火を楽しめるのも特徴の一つです。

Established as a regular event since 1948, the firework performances (hanabi) went on hiatus for some time, but begin again in 1981. Many different types of fireworks light up the night culminating in the waterfall-like "Niagara" firework which is set off along the Owatari Bridge and in the sky at the same time. Sets of fireworks are launched simultaneously and continually provide a really gorgeous show. You can experience the strength of sound and light up close and, as the fireworks are launched from two different places, the interval between the shows is not very long. The hanabi festival is a really good way to bask in the pleasure of life.

◆前橋初市まつり　Hatsuichi Festival

　このまつりは、毎月４と９の日に開かれた日用雑貨や生糸の市が起源と言われています。厩橋（現在の前橋市）城主、酒井重忠候の時代から始まった伝統ある行事で、現在では、またの名を「だるま市」と呼んでいます。祭りは、本町の八幡宮境内に持ち込まれた古いだるまを燃やす「だるま供養」で幕を開けます。力強い華龍太鼓の音が響き、境内から「市神様」の渡御（とぎょ）がスタートします。その後に、木遣りや御輿、大獅子や華龍太鼓がにぎやかに続きます。国道50号を交通規制し、千代田町二～五丁目全体に市（いち）が広がり、だるまやさまざまな縁起物を買い求める人たちでごった返します。買い手の値切る声と露天商との威勢のいいやりとりが深夜まで絶えません。このやりとりを聞いているだけでも楽しめます。

It is said that this festival, held annually since the days of the clan lord Sakai Shigenobu, used to be held on the 4th and 9th of each month. General merchandise and raw silk were the main products. These days, the Hatsuichi Festival is also referred to as the Daruma-ichi. The curtain opens on the grounds of the Hachiman Shrine in Honmachi where a Daruma doll is set on fire. Then, to the beat of large drums, the "Ichigami-sama" procession of portable wooden shrines, shishimai (dancing lions), and drum brigades leave the shrine grounds. Traffic is stopped along Route 50 until the parade reaches Chiyoda-machi where new Daruma dolls and other good luck charms and items are sold in the 1,000 stalls set up for the occasion. One of the more enjoyable activities is bargaining with the stall owners until they lower their prices.
