みどり市は群馬県の東部に位置し、総面積は208.23km²です。平成18年3月27日に新田郡笠懸町、山田郡大間々町、勢多郡東村が合併して誕生しました。
　市域は桐生市、栃木県日光市をはじめ群馬・栃木両県の8市と接しており、首都東京からは100㎞圏内に位置します。市の北部には足尾山地が連なり、その山塊に源をもつ渡良瀬川が貫流し、市の中部から南部にかけてはその清流がつくりだした大間々扇状地が広がっています。標高は100ｍから1,868mと起伏に富み、豊かな自然は四季明瞭で、季節ごとにすばらしい表情で迎えてくれます。

Midori City, located in the eastern part of Gunma Prefecture, has a total area of 208.23 square kilometers, and an elevation of 100 meters to 1,868 meters. After the merger, the city encompasses the towns of Kasakake in Nitta-gun, Omama in Yamada-gun, and Azuma Village in Seta-gun. Approximately 100 kilometers from Tokyo, Midori City borders Kiryu City, Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture, and 6 other cities in Gunma and Tochigi. To the north of Midori City lies the Ashio Mountain Range, home to the source of the Watarase River which flows through Midori City. In the heart of the city lies the Omama Delta, a fertile plain created by the pure waters of the Watarase River. As the seasons change, Midori City's abundant wealth of nature expresses itself in four distinct ways, each equally beautiful and full of character.

◆小中大滝　The Konaka River

　小中川上流にある壮大なスケールを誇る滝。4月上旬から中旬はカタクリ、4月中旬から下旬にはヤシオツツジ、シャクナゲが見頃を迎えます。新緑、紅葉の時期もまた格別です。駐車場から遊歩道を2分、トンネルを抜けると傾斜度44％、全長51mの階段式吊り橋が眼下に。スリル満点の橋を渡ると大滝が雄大な姿を現します。

At the source of the Konaka River flows a great scale of water fall. During the first 3 weeks of April, "katakuri" flowers can be seen in full bloom. The "yashiotsutsuji" and "shakunage" trees can be appreciated in their full bloom from the middle to the end of the month. Lush, green foliage and the changing leaves of autumn are of exceptional beauty. From the parking lot, a 2 minute stroll along the promenade and through a short tunnel ends with the magnificent sight of a 51 meter step-grate suspension bridge. Walking across the Otaki Bridge is quite thrilling, as one descends the 44%-grade suspended staircase and crosses the valley below, leading to the perfect spot for viewing the waterfall.

鍾乳洞へのアプローチとなる公園。
2つの小川が流れる園内では、夏、約70本のサルスベリが咲き誇ります。鍾乳洞は昭和59年に発見されました。全長93mで学術的に貴重な二次的生成物があります。夏でもひんやり涼しい鍾乳洞で自然の神秘をお楽しみください。また園内には、手打ちうどんやそばを楽しめる「狸穴亭（まみあなてい）」や特産品や土産物を豊富に取りそろえる「ふれあいの館」があります。

Through the park run two brooks. In summer, about 70 of beautiful "sarusuberi" (crepe myrtle) trees bloom The 93 meter-long limestone caves, discovered in 1984, produce a secondary product which is scientifically very valuable. One can enjoy the natural mystery of the limestone caves, where even in summer one can stay cool. In the park, hand-made soba and udon noodles can be enjoyed at "Mamianatei." Souveneirs and Omama's local specialties can also be purchased at the"Fureaikan."

蓮や菖蒲、水芭蕉などの湿性植物や山野草など、四季折々200種類の花々が楽しめます。早春から初夏にかけては福寿草、カッコソウ、九輪草。夏は山ユリ、八重咲きのドクダミ、秋は萩、冬はロウバイなどが代表的です。

Lotus, iris, and skunk cabbage are among the 200 varieties of seasonal flowers, aquatic plants and countryside grasses that one can see at the Aquatic Botanical Gardens. From early spring to early summer, the breathtaking pheasant's-eye, "kakosou," and "kurinsou" flowers can be seen in bloom. The summer brings "yamayuri," "yaesaki," and "dokudami" (chameleon plant); autumn the "hagi" (blush clover); and winter, the beautiful "roubai" flower.

小平川の清流で水遊びが楽しめ、芝生広場でくつろげる公園です。川は浅く、流れもゆっくりなので、ちびっ子も思い切り水遊びを満喫できます。広々とした芝生広場にあるすべり台や遊具は子供たちに大人気です。また、親水公園の一角には屋内型最大級の規模を誇る「野口水車」が保存されています。この水車は、明治43年から昭和30年頃まで精米や製粉の動力として働き続けてきたものです。

Enjoy playing in the clear waters of the Odaira River, or make yourself comfortable on the lawn of the surrounding park. Little children love to play in the shallow, gentle river water, and the playground and slide in the surrounding spacious park. One corner of the park boasts a full-scale indoor model of the Noguchi Water Wheel. The Water Wheel's power was used for making polished rice and milling rice flower from 1910 to 1955, and it can still be seen today at the museum.

◆高津戸峡　Takatsudo-Kyou

　関東の耶馬溪とも称される高津戸峡。渓谷沿いの遊歩道からは「ゴリラ岩」や「ポットホール」など数々の景勝地が望めます。渡良瀬川両岸の紅葉が映える秋の景観は見逃せません。

Takatsudo-Kyou is called the "Yabakei" of the Kantou region, after the famous Yabakei valley in Kyushu. The Watarase Valley's picturesque scenery can be seen from the promenade which runs along it, notably "Gorilla Rock" (a large stone shaped like a gorilla's head) and the "Pothole," a creation in stone made by the river. The brilliant colors of the changing autumn leaves along both banks of the Watarase River are a must-see.

◆カタクリ・さくらまつり　Katakuri and Cherry-Blossom Festival

可憐な紫紅色の花を咲かせて春をはこぶ小さな妖精カタクリと、鹿の川沼の土手に咲き誇るソメイヨシノをお楽しみください。カタクリ群生地は国指定史跡「岩宿遺跡」の中にあります。

Lovely purple "katakuri" flowers welcome in the spring season, while "someiyoshino" cherry blossoms bloom along the banks of the Kanokawa Pond. A cluster of katakuri flowers grow within the borders of the nearby Iwajuku excavation site, recognized by the Japanese government as a protected historical location.

◆大間々園まつり　Omama Gion Festival

山車の巡行や民謡踊りパレード、神馬が走る伝統行事など、盛りだくさんの内容です。金魚すくいや懐かしい雰囲気の露店がならび、趣ある商店街を歩いているだけでも楽しめるお祭りです。「おぎょん」の名で親しまれてきたこのお祭りは、起源を380年以上も前にもち、「上州三大園」に数えられる伝統を誇ります。

This event features a parade of portable shrines and traditional folk dance, the marching of a sacred horse, and much more. Catching goldfish in the traditional Japanese game of "kingyosukui," and visiting the many shops that fill the streets during festival season will fill you with nostalgia. Simply walking through the traditional Japanese shopping district on Omama's main street is a delightful experience which is amplified during the festival season. The use of the name "Gion" for Omama's festival originated over 380 years ago, and The Omama Gion Festival is proudly considered one of the three largest traditional festivals in Gunma prefecture.

◆草木湖まつり　Kusakiko Festival

昭和52年に草木ダムが完成したのを機に始められたお祭りです。ダム建設に伴いこの地を離れた方々に、年に一度はふるさとで楽しい一日を過ごしていただきたいという思いを込め、毎年工夫をこらして実施しています。草木ダム直下から打ち上げる花火はたいへん好評で、周囲の山々にこだまする大音響もこの花火の魅力のひとつです。

The Kusakiko Festival is a festival celebrating the completion of the Kusaki Dam in 1977. Once a year, the former residents of Kusaki Village enjoy a festival in the place of their former homes. In an extremely popular show, fireworks are launched from directly below the Kusaki Dam. The sound of the fireworks echoing off the surrounding mountains is one of the festival's many charms.

◆笠懸まつり　Kasakake Festival

人口が増加傾向にある笠懸地区では、新旧住民の交流の場として夏祭りを実施しています。ステージでは、八木節をはじめ和太鼓やダンスなど、市民参加型のイベントが繰り広げられます。圧巻は笠懸町商工会青年部が担ぐ「氷みこし」で、涼しげであり神秘的です。

As the population of the Kasakake district has been increasing in recent years, the summer festival has become a center of cultural exchange between its old and new residents. On stage, townspeople of all ages dance to the "Yagibushi" Folk Song, to the sounds of "taiko" drums filling the air. For the highlight of the festival, young members of the Kasakake Chamber of Commerce and Industry carry the "koorimikoshi," a special shrine crafted from ice, on their shoulders, creating a mysterious, cooling atmosphere during the otherwise hot summer.

◆ひまわりの花畑まつり　Flowew Garden of Sunflower Festival

9月下旬から10月中旬、夏のひまわりより小さめの「ひまわり」約12万本が咲き誇ります。期間中、花の良い時期に、地元の人たちによる「ひまわりまつり」が開催され、「笠懸（かさがけ）」の武技や足湯体験、新鮮野菜の即売会などが行われます。

While sunflowers normally blooms in summer, 120,000 of slightly smaller “himawari" sunflowers blooms from late September to mid October. The Himawari Festival occurs at the ideal time for viewing the himawari sunflower. Relaxing footbaths, a fresh vegetable market, and even a horseback archery performance (in the style of Japanese samurai from the Kamakura Era) are all organized by local people.

◆関東菊花大会　Kantou Region Chrysanthemum Convention

大菊三本立ての盆養菊や盆栽菊、懸崖菊、大作り菊など1,300鉢以上が展示され、菊の香りを漂わせます。さらに、花を衣装に散りばめた菊人形が会場を華やかに彩ります。11月上旬には、会場内で観光物産まつりも開かれます。

This convention is an exhibition of 1,300 chrysanthemums, including "bonyogiku" and "bonsaigiku" (large chrysanthemums, displayed in threes in a single pot), "kengaigiku," and "ozukurigiku." As spectators walk through the festival, the smell of chrysanthemums fills the air. Dolls dressed in traditional Japanese costumes woven with chrysanthemums make for a gorgeous atmosphere. An additional festival occurs in early November, where local products can be purchased.

◆岩宿遺跡・岩宿博物館　Iwajukuiseki·Iwajuku Museum

岩宿遺跡は、1946年（昭和21年）の秋に地元研究者である相沢忠洋氏によって発見されました。それまで日本人のルーツは縄文時代（新石器時代）以降としていたものを、日本にも旧石器時代があったことを最初に証明した遺跡として史跡に指定されています。岩宿博物館では、約3.5万年から約1.3万年前に日本列島で展開された人類の生活を全国的な規模で再現しています。

The historical excavation site Iwajukuiseki was discovered in the fall of 1946 by local researcher Tadahiro Aizawa. The origin of the Japanese people was believed to have taken place after the Jomon Period (Neolithic Era). By discovering Iwajukuiseki, Aizawa proved that the origin of Japanese people actually took place during the Paleolithic Era. In the Iwajuku Museum is an exhibition showing the origin of humanity in Japan 350,000 to 130,000 years ago.

◆大間々博物館（コノドント館）　Omama Museum (Conodont Museum)

この博物館は、豊かな自然と歴史に恵まれた大間々町に関係の深い歴史・民俗・自然に関する資料を収集・展示しています。大正10年に建築された旧大間々銀行の営業所本館と倉庫を修復し、昭和63年4月に開館しました。

An abundance of natural and historical objects related to Omama's history and culture can be found on display at the Omama Conodont Museum. Formerly the Omama Bank, the building which houses the museum was constructed in 1921, and was renovated and re-opened in April of 1988 as the Conodont Museum.

◆富弘美術館　Tomihiro Art Museum

草木湖畔に位置するこの美術館は、地元東町出身の詩画家、星野富弘さんの作品を一般公開する美術館です。平成17年4月にリニューアルオープンしました。正方形の建物は円筒状の大小33の部屋からなり、展示室のほかビデオルーム、図書コーナー、ショップ、カフェなどがあります。生命の尊さ、やさしさを語り続ける星野さんの作品をゆっくりと鑑賞していただき、湖畔を望むカフェで星野さんの作品を育んだ東町の自然をご堪能ください。

Nestled in the Kusagiko Causeway lies an art museum containing the works of Azuma-cho's local artist and poet Tomihiro Hoshino. The museum, open to the public was newly renovated and reopened in April of 2005. The square building is composed of 33 cylindrical rooms of various sizes. In addition to the exhibition rooms, there is a video room, a book corner, a gift shop, a café, and more. Please enjoy the works of Mr. Hoshino, who continually speaks on the preciousness of life and kindness, in the tranquil atmosphere of his museum, and enjoy the breathtaking view from the café of Azuma-cho.
