Nakanojo Village

Outline

 中之条町は群馬県の北西部に位置し、新潟・長野県に接する県境の町です。森林が面積の半分以上を占め、自然にあふれています。南部は古くから市街地が形成され、政治、経済、文化、交通の中心として発展してきました。北部は、風光明媚な三国山系の高峯がそびえ、四万・沢渡・尻焼などの温泉が多くの旅行客を癒しています

The town of Nakanojo is located in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture, and is bordered by Niigata and Nagano. Over half of the total area is covered by forests and overflows with naturally. The southern area of Nakanojo is somewhat level landscape and developed as politics, economy, culture, the center of traffic for many years. In the northern area is filled with the high and beautiful Mikuni Mountains and relaxing hot spring such as Shima Onsen and Sawatari Onsen , Shiriyaki Onsen.

◆野反湖 Lake Nozori

 標高1,513m、周囲12kmのダム湖です。上信越高原国立公園の特別地域、野反自然休養林に指定されており、約300種以上の高山植物が群生します。ハイキングやキャンプ、釣りなど、手つかずの大自然を満喫することができます。

The lake is located at an altitude of 1513 meter and is a water supply dam of 12 kilometer. Situated in the Joshinetsu Highland National Park, it is a good place for recuperation amid more than 300 kinds of alpine plants. You can enjoy untouched nature such as hiking and camping, fishing to the fill.

◆芳ヶ平 Yoshigadaira

 白根山の北から、横手山の南東方向にかけて広がる芳ヶ平は、日本屈指の高層高原。ワタスゲやミズバショウのハイキングコースは訪れる人を幻想的な世界に誘います。

Located in the north of Mt.shirane and spreading to the southeast of Mt.Yokote, Yoshigadaira is one of Japans most outstanding highland areas. Visitors will be fascinated by the hiking course amid cotton grass and skunk cabbage.

◆チャツボミゴケ Cyatsubomigoke

 六合地区の森には、酸性の水の流れるところに生息する植物「チャツボミゴケ」が自生しています。ここは、鉱泉も湧き出ています。このように、広範囲に自生しているのは全国的にも珍しく貴重な苔の群生地です。

In the acid water of the woods of Kuni area , there is a plant called "Cyatsubomigoke".In this area there are also mineral springs and you can enjoy a seldom cluster of moss.

◆四万の甌穴 Sima no Ouketsu

 甌穴とは、川の渦巻き状の流れにより、石や砂が同じところを回り、川底の岩盤と接触して浸食されてできた丸い穴です。数万年もの長い年月を経て、自然が作り出した芸術ともいえます。ここには、大小あわせて8個の甌穴があります。大きいものは口径8m、深さ3.2mを越えます。

Ouketsu are pot holes on the river bed. Holes were dug by stones and sands caught in the spiral stream of the river over thousands of years. We call it the art of nature. Both large and small, there are total eight. The largest one is 8 meter in diameter and 3.2 meters in depth.

◆暮坂峠 Kuresaka Pass

 沢渡温泉から草津方面に向かう道は、古くから人々の往来が頻繁に行われ、現在は日本ロマンチック街道となっております。特に若山牧水が旅した紅葉の頃は鮮やかな景観を誇り、牧水が通った10月20日に、毎年牧水まつりが行われます。

The road from Sawatari Onsen toward Kusatsu has historically been a frequently used route for people traveling through, and today it is known as the "Japan Romantic Road". In particular, the vibrant autumn scenery where Wakayama Bokusui (a haiku author) traveled to is a spot the town is very proud of. The Bokusui Festival is held here every year on October 20 –the date on which Bokusui passed through the area.

Hot Springs

◆四万温泉 Shima Onsen

 「四万(よんまん)の病に効く伝説の湯」として知られる四万温泉。国民保養温泉地の第1号に指定されています。温泉街には伝統的な湯宿建築の木造旅館から近代的なホテルまでが建ち並び、懐かしさと新しさが行き交います。また飲泉や足湯も楽しむことができます。

Shima Onsen is known for its famous "legendary waters that cure 40,000types of disease". It was the first hot spring to be registered as a National Health-giving Hot Spring. There is a ryokan(Japanese inn) with wooden architecture, located near a row of modern hotels, creating a juxtaposition of old and new. You can enjoy drinking spring water and the footbathing, too.

◆沢渡温泉 Sawatari Onsen

 標高600mの風光明媚な温泉地です。湯治場としての歴史は古く、江戸時代には暮坂峠を越えて草津へ通ずる要路であった為「草津の仕上げ湯」として知られていました。多くの療養客の中には幕末の蘭学者高野長英などの名も挙げられます。現在は「一浴玉の肌美人の湯」として女性に人気です。

Sawatari Onsen, located 600 meter high, is a hot spring resort of scenic beauty, surrounded by the beautiful mountains. Sawatari onsen has a long history as a place for hot springs recuperation or toji. It the Edo period, it became well-known as the best hot spring to enjoy for a final stop on the way home from Kusatsu Onsen . There were many recuperation visitors including celebrities at that time like Takano Choei, an authority of Western studies. It is also known, and especially popular among ladies, as the spring of beauty, moisturizing and conditioning the skin.

◆尻焼温泉 Shiriyaki Onsen

 長笹沢川の川底から湧き出る温泉で、川そのものが大きな露天風呂になっています。痔の治療に特効があるとされ、川底の石に腰を下ろして入浴したことから「尻焼」と名がつきました。

In a hot spring springing out of the bottom of a river of Nagasasazawa River, rever itself becomes the big outdoor bath. It was said that there was a special effect for the treatment of hemorrhoids and gained "buttocks ware" and the name because I sat down on a stone of the bottom of a river and took a bath.

Events

◆嵩山まつり Takayama Festival

 毎年5月5日、麓の親都神社のお祭りとあわせて行われます。山は新緑に包まれ、岩肌にはツツジが咲き、子どもからお年寄りまで大勢の人が嵩山に登ります。親都神社の北側から山の中腹にかけて約100匹の鯉のぼりが揚げられます。この勇壮な眺めは、中之条町の風物詩となっています。

Every year on Many 5th a festival is held at the Chikato Shrine at the foot of Mount Take. At this time, the mountain is covered in the first green of spring, azalea flowers bloom on the rock face, and crowds of people of all ages come to climb it. Approximately 100carp streamers are flown at the north side of chikato shrine to mid-way up the mountain. This inspiring scene has become a seasonal tradition at Nakanojo.

◆鳥追い祭 Torioi Festival

 毎年1月14日に、田畑の作物を荒らす鳥や獣を追い払い、作物の豊かな実り・町内厄除・家内安全を願って行われています。大太鼓が町内を練り歩きながらたたかれ、厄年の人や商店からみかんなどが投げられ、厄落としや、商売繁盛を祈って行われます。

This festival is held every year on January 14th, for chasing away birds and other pests that ate farmers' produce. The festival also gave farmers a chance to pray for a bountiful harvest, for evil spirits to be banished from the town, and for the safety of families there.
People walk around the town banging on large drums. Businesses and people for whom it is 'yakudoshi', or an unlucky year throw oranges and other things, to pray for prosperity and dispel evil sprits.

◆白久保のお茶講 Shirokubo no Ocha-kou

 室町時代から「闘茶(お茶の飲み当て)」の形式を残しているもので、全国でも珍しい民俗行事です。毎年2月24日にお茶講の家にて行われます。この貴重な民俗行事を予約により体験することもできます。(国指定重要無形民俗文化財)

It is said that this ceremony is basted on the from of 'Toucya'(a tea drinking quiz) dating back to the Muromachi Period. Different types of tea are presented, and if the majority of tasters correctly guess what type of tea has been served, a good harvest can be expected in the village that year. Even in Japan this is a unique tradition. The ceremony happens every year on February 24th at the Chakou no Ie (The House). Making a reservation can experience this treasured tradition.
