高崎市は、東京から約１００キロ、関東平野の北西に位置しています。埼玉県北部に接する新町地域から、長野県東南部に接する倉渕地域までの７つの地域で構成され、高崎・新町地域の平野部から、群馬・箕郷・榛名・倉渕・吉井地域にかけての豊かな自然と山々に囲まれたエリアへと移っていきます。上越新幹線や長野新幹線、関越自動車道が通り、首都圏と日本海沿岸を結ぶ交流拠点都市として発展しています。

Takasaki is located about 100 kilometers from Tokyo on the northwestern edge of the Kanto Plain. The city consists of 7 different regions stretching from the Shinmachi region, which borders the northern part of Saitama Prefecture, to the Kurabuchi region, which borders the southeastern part of Nagano Prefecture. The geographical features gradually change from the flat plains of Takasaki and Shinmachi to the mountains of Gunma, Misato, Haruna, Kurabuchi and the Yoshii region. Serviced by the Joetsu and Nagano "Shinkansen" Bullet Train lines, as well as the Kanetsu Highway, Takasaki City is growing as a bridge between Tokyo and the Sea of Japan.

◆みさと芝桜公園　Misato Shibazakura Park (Misato Moss Pink Park)

　「織姫が置き忘れた桜の色のはごろも」をイメージし、赤・ピンク・白の3色の芝桜を帯状に連ね、地形や散策路に合わせて2.9haにわたり、うねり・渦巻きの模様を描き出しています。

This park was designed in the image of "the pink Robe of Feathers left by Princess Orihime". It is 2.9 hectares, full of red, pink and white Shibazakura (moss pinks) in patterns of waves and swirls.

◆白衣大観音　Byakui Dai-Kannon 　TEL027-322-2269

　高さ41.8ｍ（地上9階相当）、重さ6000ｔのコンクリート作りの観音様は胎内を拝観することもできます。 安置された仏様をお参りしながら観音様の肩まで登ることができます。

41.8 meters (9 stories) tall., weighing 6000 tons.this hollow statue where Buddha is enshrined allows visitors to visit many Buddhist idols as they climb the stairs to the shoulders of the Kannonsama.

◆高崎城址　Takasaki Castle

　城下町の面影をとどめる乾櫓やお堀端は、慶長３年箕輪城主の井伊直政が和田城後に築いた高崎城の名残を今に伝えます。

Inui Tower and its moat serve as constant reminders of the area's past and Takasaki's beginning. In the Keichou period, Ii Naomasa of Minowa Castle built Takasaki Castle after destroying the existing Wada Castle. This is when the area first began to be called Takasaki.

◆榛名神社　Haruna Shrine 　TEL027-374-9050

　榛名神社は、今から1400年前に創祀(ｿｳｼ)したと伝えられています。927年に完成した「延喜式神名帳」の中で上野国十二社の一つとして「式内社」と呼ばれており、すでに格式の高い神社だったとわかります。農耕の神様と開運の神様が祀られていて、全国から多くの参詣者が訪れています。参道にある国指定の天然記念物の「矢立杉(ﾔﾀﾃｽｷﾞ)」は、戦国時代の武将武田信玄が戦争で勝つことを祈願して矢を射立てたと言われています。また、岩と一体化したような社殿はかなりの見ごたえで、荘厳な雰囲気にあふれています。

Haruna Shrine was said to have been built 1400 years ago and was introduced in an old book written in 927 as one of the twelve holy shrines of Gunma, prooving that this shrine has a long history as a magnificent shrine. It was dedicated to the god of agriculture and the god of improvement of one's fortune. Many visitors come to the shrine from all over Japan. The cedar tree called "Yatatesugi" on the path is a National Treasure Monument. At the time of the civil wars, it was said that the great warrior Takeda Shingen shot an arrow at the cedar to pray for victory. Its main hall, which seems melded with rocks, is a spectacular. Visitors can feel a solemn atmosphere here

◆クラインガルテン　Klein Garten 　TEL027-378-3834

　ドイツ語で「ちいさな庭」という意味のクラインガルテンでは、都会で暮らす人たちや、自然とふれあいたい人たちが、自分で野菜や花作りを楽しめます。基本的な管理を教えてくれますし、講習会もあるので安心です。

In Klein Garten, which means "Small Garden" in German, people who live in cities or who want to live close together with nature can enjoy growing vegetable and flowers on their own. Basic know-how and training programs are available.

◆榛名湖　Lake Haruna

　榛名湖は、榛名山山頂附近にあり、四季折々の風景が美しく、年間１００万人の観光客が訪れています。毎年２月になると湖面が凍結し、あたり一面が雪に覆われて銀世界に変わります。湖面に張っている氷が厚くなると、氷上を歩くことができ、厳寒の大自然の中でスケートが楽しめます。冬のレジャーで最も人気があるのは、氷に穴をあけて釣りを楽しむ「氷上ワカサギ釣り」です。ワカサギは体長わずか１０センチの小さな魚ですが、竿にかかったときの手ごたえが忘れられず、多くのリピーターが訪れています。

Lake Haruna is located on the top of Mt. Haruna. Scenery of four seasons is beautiful and one million tourists visit the lake all year. The surface of the lake is frozen every February and everything is covered with snow. If the ice on the lake is thick enough to walk on, you can enjoy ice skating in the middle of winter. The most popular recreation is ice fishing of Wakasagi. Wakasagi is a small fish which is 10 centimeter long, and it is much fun to fish with rod and line. Many people return to the lake for ice fishing.

◆箕郷梅林　Misato Plum Grove

　関東平野を一望する丘陵地約300haに、10万本の梅の花があたり一面純白の絨毯のように咲き誇り、梅まつり期間には、観梅を楽しむ人々でにぎわいます。是非一度、枝をよけながらの散歩や梅の花にかこまれてお弁当とお昼寝を満喫してください。

This beautiful plum grove is located on a hill of about 300 hectares in area, and commands the whole view of the Kanto Plain. A white carpet of 100,000 plum trees blossom proudly, inviting visitors to appreciate the view during the Plum Festival. Come and enjoy a stroll down the petal strewn paths after a delicious bento while blossoms float around you.

◆高崎哲学堂（旧井上邸）
　 Takasaki Tetsugakudou（Former Inoue Residence）

　高崎の文化の礎を築いた井上房一郎の邸宅でした。世界的建築家であり群馬音楽センターの設計者であるアントニン・レーモンドの自邸をもとに設計されており、レーモンドの住宅空間を彷彿とさせる建築物として貴重です。

The foundation of Takasaki culture was laid when the Inoue Residence was built. It was designed by the world renowned architect Antonin Raymond who also designed the Gunma Music Center. The plans for the Inoue Residence were based on Raymond's own house. The use of open space within the home is considered one of itsa valuable structural characteristics

　高崎ゆかりの作家をはじめ、世界的アーティストの収蔵作品もたくさん展示されています。個性的な企画展はコンサートも合わせて開かれ、高崎駅にも近く、気軽に立ち寄れるアートスペースです。

At the Takasaki Museum of Art, one can see numerous works created by world famous artists alongside notable local artists. Exhibitions are often planned in conjunction with performances by artists. The museum is conveniently located near Takasaki Station

◆高崎市染料植物園　Takasaki City Dye Plant Botanical Garden

　染料の原料となる植物を集め、保護管理する日本初の植物園です。自然生態園は温室になっていて、熱帯地方に自生する染料植物を観察することができます。

This is the first garden in Japan to house a collection of such a wide range of dyed plants under one roof in a controlled environment. The Natural Ecological Garden is a greenhouse in which you can observe dyed plants growing in a tropical climate.

◆かみつけの里博物館　Kamitsukeno-sato Museum of Archaeology

　日本で初めて発見された豪族の館を100分の1の模型で再現したコーナーや数々の埴輪や土器、日本最古の飾履（くつ）などを９つのコーナーでわかりやすく展示しています。館内では魅力的な企画展を順次開催しています。

The first discovered 1/100 scale miniature of the mansion of a powerful Japanese family and a lot of ancient clay figures, earthenware and old decorative shoes are exhibited in nine areas here. Our museum provides visitors with fascinating exhibitions all year round.

◆小栗上野介（東善寺）　Oguri-Kouzukenosuke (Tohzen-ji Temple)

　明治の近代化の大きな業績を残した上野介は、徳川幕府崩壊に伴い、現在の倉渕町権田に隠遁しましたが、「反逆の企て」があるとして慶応４（１８６８）年閏４月５日、家臣と共に西軍によって捕らえられ、翌日水沼川原において斬首されました。その終焉の地には「偉人小栗上野介罪なくして此所に斬らる」と刻まれた顕彰慰霊碑が建っています。

Oguri contributed a lot of the modernization of Japan in the nineteenth century. He was a high official of the Tokugawa Shogunate, but secluded himself at Kurabuchi after the collapse of the government. Then he was arrested with his followers on suspicion of rebellion on April 5, 1868 and decapitated on the next day at Mizunuma Kawara. At place where he was executed stands a monument with the following statement inscribed "Great Oguri-Kouzukenosuke was falsely accused and decapitated here".

◆高崎まつり　Takasaki Festival

　みこし・山車・お囃子がまちを活気づける高崎まつりは、市民の誰もが心待ちにしているイベントです。そして北関東最大級の花火は、毎年多くの人々を感動させます。

Each citizen of Takasaki looks forward to the Takasaki Festival every year. It adds new life to the city with its portable shrines (Mikoshi), floats (Dashi), and festival music (Ohayashi). People come from all over the prefecture to see Takasaki's Fireworks Display which is the largest in the Northern Kanto area.

◆新町ふるさと祭り　Shin-machi Furusato Festival

　粋な浴衣姿の盆踊り大会、それぞれの思いを託した幻想的な温井川灯籠流し。花火大会は、七色の花を咲かせる光と音の響宴です。夏祭の夜は郷愁を誘い、また、思い出をつくります。

Enjoy Bon Dance in yukata (Japanese informal summer kimono) and the fantastic display of floating lanterns on the Nukui River at night. The fireworks display is a feast of light and sound. The night of the Summer Festival is full of nostalgia and memories.

◆榛名の祭り花火大会　Haruna Festival Fireworks

　榛名富士をバックに次々とボートから投げ込まれる水中花火は、いくつもの扉を開いたかのように、湖面を華やかに飾ります。外輪山に響き渡る音も臨場感にあふれ、体全体でイベントを体感できます、灯籠流しなどのイベントもあります。

At this event, fireworks are thrown into the lake one after another from boats against the background of Haruna-Fuji. The resulting scene decorates the surface of the water brilliantly. Other events like the floating of lighted lanterns are also make for a spectacular night.

◆たかさき雷舞フェスティバル　Takasaki Raibu Festival

　「雷舞」は、高崎の街を舞台に群馬の風物詩とも言うべき「雷」のように激しく舞うという意味が込められたダンスパフォーマンスです。「八木節」などのアレンジ曲を使用し、だるま型の鳴子「だる子」を持ち、思い思いの衣装を身に纏い、パフォーマンスを繰り広げます。

Raibu（雷舞）is dance performance wherein participants endeavor to dance（舞）as fiercely as lightening（雷）. This festival can be said to be a particularly interesting Gunma event. Using a special arrangement of several songs blended with a traditional harvest song（yagi-bushi）, dancers utilize Daruma shaped clappers and wear costumes of their own choosing as they unveil their performances.

◆えびす講市　The Ebisuko Market

　えびす講市は、商人のまち高崎ならではのイベント。商店街の大売出しや抽選会など街中が賑わいます。

Takasaki is such a commercial city that the Ebisuko Market (honoring the God of wealth) makes perfect sense. The streets are filled with people who come to take advantage of the big sales and drawings for various prizes.

◆光のページェント　Pageant of Light

　高崎の冬の夜を彩る光のページェントは、市民の心を明るく灯す一大イベントです。

The Pageant of Light, which illuminates the winter nights of Takasaki is a major event which brightens the hearts of its citizens.

◆少林山だるま市　The Daruma Market

　冬の風物詩・少林山だるま市。かじかむ手を温めながら、だるまを売る人と買う人が値段を競り合います。

A famous winter scene of Takasaki City is the Daruma Market held at Shorinzan Temple. Buyers and sellers bargain over the price of Daruma Dolls while rubbing their hands together to keep warm.
