富岡市は群馬県の南西部に位置し、人口約５万３千人の街です。市内には、２００７年にユネスコの世界遺産暫定リストに「富岡製糸場と絹産業遺産群」として記載された日本近代産業のシンボル「富岡製糸場」があります。また、春は桜、秋は紅葉が見事な「妙義山」、野生動物が広大な敷地で暮らす「群馬サファリパーク」や群馬県立自然史博物館などがあり、歴史と文化と自然に恵まれた街です。

Tomioka City is located in the southwest of Gunma Prefecture. Its population is about 53 thousand. The city's 'Tomioka Silk Mill' was submitted as the 'Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage' on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The mill is a symbol of Japanese modern industry. Besides the Silk Mill, Mt. Myogi's spring cherry blossoms and autumn red leaves are wonderful. The Gunma Safari Park also has various kinds of wild animals on its extensive grounds and there is also the Gunma Museum of Natural History in Tomioka. This area is worth visiting to experience the history, culture and nature of Gunma.

◆富岡製糸場　Tomioka Silk Mill

明治維新直後、政府により日本の近代国家への礎石として１８７２年に建設された富岡製糸場は、当時世界最大規模を誇っていました。現在も建物は、創業当初の頃のままの状態で保存されています。明治政府がつくった官営工場の中で、ほぼ完全な形で残っているのは富岡製糸場だけで、百数十年の時を経た今も圧倒的な存在感で訪れる人を魅了します。また、２００７年にユネスコ世界遺産暫定リストに記載されました。

The Tomioka Silk Mill was established in 1872 after the Meiji Restoration by the Japanese government to be the foundation for developing a modern country. When it was established, it was one of the greatest silk mills in the world. Its buildings have been maintained to preserve its original structure. Of all the factories established by Meiji Government, only the Tomioka Silk Mill remains completely preserved. Even now, after more than a hundred years, it attracts visitors with its spectacular appearance. It was put on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage in 2007.

◆大塩湖桜　Cherry blossoms by Lake Oshio

群馬サファリパークに隣接する大塩湖。湖畔には約１，０００本の桜やつつじの花々が咲き乱れます。貸しボートでお花見ができるほか、ヘラブナやコイなどの釣りを楽しむことができます。

◆妙義神社しだれ桜　Myogi Shrine Weeping Cherry Blossoms

日本三大奇勝の妙義山の山懐に抱かれて静かにたたずむ妙義神社には、樹齢２００年余りになるしだれ桜がありみごとな花を咲かせます。本社、唐門、総門は、国の重要文化財に指定されています。

A weeping cherry tree, more than 200 years old, beautifully blossoms at Myogi shrine every year. Myogi Shrine has a quiet atmosphere on Mt. Myogi which is one of the three most beautiful places for scenic beauty in Japan. The main shrine and its two gates (kara-mon and so-mon) are designated as a National Important Cultural Treasures.

Located at an elevation of 500m, the campsite of Fujita Forest Park has cabins and bungalows with shared kitchen with barbeque equipment. You can see Mt.Asama and all three Jomo mountains, Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna and Mt. Myogi, from an observation platform.

◆妙義山パノラマパーク　Mt. Myogi Panorama Park

妙義山の三山（白雲・金洞・金鶏）を一望できる絶好の撮影スポットです。秋は妙義山をバックにして、色とりどりのコスモスの花が咲き乱れます。パーク内には、妙義山をモチーフに描いた作品を展示している「妙義ふるさと美術館」や、公営の日帰り入浴施設「妙義ふれあいプラザ　もみじの湯」などの施設があります。

The park is a good place to take pictures of Mount Myogi, Mount Haku-un, Mount Kondo and Mount Kinkei. In autumn, colorful cosmos flowers decorate the landscape of Mt. Myogi. There is also a 'Myogi Furusato Gallery', which displays paintings of Mt. Myogi, and 'Myogi Fureai Plaza' in the park.

◆貫前神社　Nukisaki Shrine

例年、群馬県内で一番多くの初詣の参拝者が訪れる神社です。参道を下った低地に社殿がある全国的に珍しい構造で、本殿・拝殿・楼門は寛永１２年（１６３５）３代将軍徳川家光の再建、５代将軍綱吉による大がかりな修理を経て今日に至ります。本殿・拝殿・楼門は国の重要文化財に指定されています。

During Hatsumode, the first visit to a shrine during the new year, Nukisaki shrine is the most popular shrine for the people of Gunma. The layout of this shrine is unique as the shrines are located lower than the path approaching the shrine. The main shrine, the front shrine, and the Romon gate, were rebuilt by Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, in 1635 and renovated by the fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi, later. These structures are designated as National Important Cultural Treasures.

You can see animals like lions, tigers, elephants, zebras and giraffes through a plate of glass at the Gunma Safari Park. These animals are allowed to roam free through the extensive grounds so they can live in nature. There are places where you can touch the animals and an amusement park on the grounds. This building is a combined art gallery and a museum. Art pieces produced by artists who are considered leaders in modern art or have connection with Tomioka are displayed. ◆富岡市立妙義ふるさと美術館　Myogi Furusato Museum

妙義山を背景に建てられたすばらしい眺望の美術館。館内には「妙義山を描く絵画展」での大賞・優秀作品が常設展示されているほか、企画展示室もある。三階のホールは上毛の山々が展望でき、風景をスケッチできる３６０°のパノラマ展望写生室になっている。

This gallery stands at the front of Mt. Myogi and displays pieces which were awarded prizes in the 'Exhibition of Mt. Myogi Paintings' as well as other themed pieces for a given period of time. The hall on the third floor offers a 360° panorama observation room where visitors can see and draw the mountains of Jomo (Gunma).
